Big Projects & Lessons Learned

April 2021 Chapter Meeting

Join Dusty Fredrickson from the City of Spokane Project Management Office for a discussion of lessons learned around implementing enterprise-level applications (buying vs building).

Using the City’s recent experience implementing a new Legal Case Management System for Spokane’s Municipal Criminal Justice agencies, we will discuss lessons that will help you avoid some of the same pitfalls and inform your own best practices.  Some of topics we will touch on are:

  • Defining the implementation approach.  Beware the ‘big bang.’
  • How not to set-up your Project Manager to fail.
  • “Beware of vendors bearing gifts”
  • Focusing on what’s important…  The tech or the people?
  • Team skill-sets needed for success.  If you don’t have enough on hand, buy it.
  • What does a Release Manager do?  Who should fill this role?
  • Extending your capacity planning beyond ‘go-live’

Dusty definitely doesn’t know it all, but his experience is fresh in his head.  So, please come ready to lend your own experience and lessons to the discussion.

Our Speaker: Dusty Fredrickson leads the PMO at the City of Spokane where he works to develop and expand the City’s skillsets and tools around Project Management, Continuous Improvement and Business Analysis while PMO team executes the larger, City-wide projects.
